There's Cashflow in the Back Room

Published: Jul 14, 2004

Application

Many a retail operation is successful because there was cash flow being generated in the back room. Usually, it's a repair service. But, it could be any service that has a good demand.

Your hopes and dreams of profiting from your front display of goods can survive if there's something going on in back. The sale of goods can be carried on by others in the future and not all your earnings will be in your shoes.

During a start-up when you're waiting for word-of-mouth advertising to take effect you can pay the rent and other expenses from your labor. If the results of your labor are in demand and your workmanship is of good quality the traffic will bring customers through your display area.

It's similar to the milk and other loss leaders in the back corner of a convenience store.

Your imagination can extend this concept to any type of operation beyond the retail setting.
