We do backups of all computer software we buy because the manual tells us that is the first thing to do. Regardless of our experience or level of business knowledge we comply dutifully.
In sports, we expect every team to have a backup. Most professional leagues require backup goalies, backup quarterbacks and backups at other position to ensure there is no delay in service to the customers.
If we don't have a systematic backup in our computers we do backups very soon after we have lost some data or when we hear about someone else suffering a loss.
How often do you do backups on all your other assets?
Do these few hints stimulate ideas for extending your backups to include all assets that are critical to the continued smooth operation of your business? Your customers will be the major beneficiaries. And when they tell others you will benefit.
A police force acquired a stallion from Europe to breed its showpiece horses.
I suspect this was a major investment. While this stallion was nice to look at, its key element was its sperm.
Shortly after the stallion serviced a few mares he developed a prostate ailment that caused his sudden demise before any sperm was preserved.
Almost any non-government insurance underwriter should have insisted on freezing sufficient sperm before the stallion embarked on a risky journey from his home farm.
Of course, I don't know any of the actual facts in this case – national security you know. Nevertheless, the news reports stimulate our need for backups.
