There may be some truth in this advice.

Perseverance is constantly listed as an important ingredient for success. Accomplishing a series of successes appears to be sound advice.

BUT, not counting the $$$ seems a bit risky. You could be counting the wrong successes because they could be abstract and not as concrete as a dollar.

Besides, it has been said that money is just a convenient method for measuring success.

Counting the profit on each unit of sale

A local manufacturer is said to have had a routine for counting the $$$. He would go to the shipping dock to help with the loading of a delivery truck and count off the dollar amount of profit for each unit being loaded. It was his system for keeping his focus on what mattered to him.
