You are doing business with someone for the first time and you discover that you have a strong link with this person. She or he shares a common ethnicity, culture or religion with you. Or, you both have a common geographical or educational background. Your first instinct is to place too much trust in this person without going through your usual investigative procedures. It seems natural to allow a common bond to lull us into an unearned trusting relationship.
Being confronted with this type of situation should alert you to act extra carefully.
Rather, allow the trust to create greater openness for gathering more than the usual details.
Assume you ARE biased.
Rely more on the judgement of another impartial person.
