Check Your Memos
Published: Oct 14, 2004
Application
Be wary of the message you are sending in your memos. For example...
| TO: | All Employees |
| SUBJECT: | Employee Parking |
| Effective immediately, all employees shall use only the parking spaces allocated to employees at the rear fence line of the shopping center. Violators will be subject to disciplinary action. |
| The Management |
If you were one of the employees...
- How would you feel if you had parked in the allocated area since Day One?
- How would you feel if you walked to work or used public transportation?
- Do you think all the violators will comply with this demand?
- If you were a violator, would this motivate you to be happy in your workplace?
- How many violators do you think were working under this management?
- Don't the vehicles have license plates?
A simple illustration to check your widely distributed memos
- Check your salutation, "TO."
- Check your distribution (bulletin board versus single copies.)
- Check for any harsh arbitrariness in your wording.
