Some things you think of as Common Sense may not seem obvious to others. Often we assume it is obvious to everyone. Therefore, it's important to remember that old joke about the word assume: if you assume too much you could make an ass out of you and me (ass-u-me.)
If Common is the same as Simple, then, think of the many times you have revised an innovative concept only to find that your project becomes simpler with each revision. Common Sense and Simplicity require a little work.
Simple truths need repeating. Religious institutions, clubs, fraternities and others will ritualize certain truths to keep them in the forefront of their members' minds. Not a bad idea for your workplace.
If your truths are not part of a ritual you can avoid insulting people's intelligence with such introductory phrases as: "You know... ," or "Of course, we know... ," or "As you've already discovered..."
Including this item among our maxims is a good example. Doesn't everyone know all this? We can't assume. It's just a reminder of what you already know.
