This sounds Machiavellian. You can use it that way if your situation warrants it.
Give consideration to such things as your workspace layout, lunchroom layout, computer passwords, documents filed in unlocked cabinets, access codes or keys to the premises and the sharing configurations in your computer system.
However, there are some areas where it is more like Divide and Protect. Such as restricting financial data from most employees not requiring processing access or separating marketing information from operational staff.
It only takes one disloyal employee in operations to run off with all your marketing data to supplement his/her operational experience. Restricting access is the best defense.
Another wording for this maxim is, "Don't let the left hand know what the right hand is doing."
Mine are too painful to recall here. All the times where this maxim protected us are too numerous to mention in this space.
