Do your employees tend to keep one eye on the internet job sites or newspaper want ads?
Despite employee dissatisfaction and diminishing loyalty, there may be a reticence to leave a steady paycheck. Yet, this sort of retention may not last forever and the time of departure may not be to your convenience. It is unwise to take any persons tenure for granted.
We tend to invest more in re-tooling and upgrading assets than we do in investing to retain employees. Loyalty is a two-way street.
To challenge and motivate we need to be aware of those conditions that cause people to be satisfied in their work such as learning new skills, being offered new challenges and opportunities to grow as individuals. Employees want to be appreciated, recognized for work well performed and respected as a valued contributor. Protect the investments you have made in recruiting, orientating, training and supervising by being aware of your employee satisfaction.
Your employee evaluations can include this recognition and appreciation, be growth opportunities and not a one-way critique. Evaluations are times for finding strengths that can be build upon with challenges and training.
Any employee has a need to feel valued, to feel fulfilled and to receive recognition for his or her unique skills and abilities.
In other words, to have a job to do and to know he or she is needed.
