Get Beyond the Resume with an Essay

Application

Beyond the usual resume, application questionnaire and interview questions - have a candidate write an essay. This is one way to delve deeper into a person's attitudes and inner-most thoughts. There are other factors, beyond skills and experiences, that influence how an individual's goals will match your organizational goals. An essay is far less expensive than paying for a battery of psychological testing.

This selection technique has been used for more than sixty years. It has been used by employers in situations demanding superior selection of new employees. While you may not have security and sensitivity issues with each person in your employ, you may realize the importance and profit opportunities resulting from dedicated people who share your goals.

The written essay could take the form of a prepared oral speech to a group or a Power Point presentation. The purpose is to allow the candidate time to prepare and express thoughts without the stress of a formal interview session.

You can prepare a guideline which includes such items as copies of portions of your business plan, mission statement, desired culture, expected contributions from employees, or a list of questions. The candidate may select from your guide and not be restricted to your suggestions. Describe your purpose, the expected length and format. Try not to make the guideline too restrictive. You may prefer to simply ask the candidate to describe all the reasons why they believe they can contribute to the success of your business.

Study and analyze the results carefully. It helps to have a list of expressions, words and phrases that could give an indication of the thoughts you want to be revealed. Beyond revealing thoughts, you will be assessing communicative skills among other characteristics.
