When a person points out a flaw in your character or behavior it may be a major weakness in their own. The attacker may be consciously or unconsciously aware of the fault in themselves.
There are many spinoffs or corollaries to this idea. For instance, a person may be very guarded about her or his personal thoughts or feelings and yet, is eager to respond to your probing. Sometimes, the person seems to be hoping you would probe. Your probing could lead to a closer relationship. On the other hand, be cautious because there could be more serious and conscious reasons for the secrecy.
During my twenties I was a preacher. Church members were always remarking about how such a young person could have insight into their personal frailties and sins. I had discovered that my own concerns and sins were no different from those of others.
