Try as we may, there are times when trying to change peoples' attitudes or habits is a lost cause.
This is especially common when a strong culture is involved. You may have success changing behavior that was originally determined by an individual person. However, when the pattern of behavior was determined culturally, you are best advised to abandon your efforts. People tend to regress to deeply rooted ideas.
Behavior modification is believed to be a possibility by most behavioral scientists. On the other hand, there are managers who view the BS acronym for Behavioral Science to have more of a farmyard connotation and believe this maxim to be 100% true.
The maxim is presented here to develop an awareness for small business managers. In case it is 100% true, be wary of expending money and effort in training and marketing campaigns designed to change peoples' behavior patterns. Be wary of trusting people with "spots."
We were trying to grasp the concept of Regression Analysis in a mathematics class when the professor asked, "Do you know who created this formula?"
He told of this professor who was doing research to explain why Scandinavians maintained a certain height through successive generations. His data indicated that while many individuals vary in height, there was a moving average over time. In other words, heights of individuals may vary but, over many cases these heights regress to a specific trend line.
The professor could not find a suitable mathematical formula for this phenomenon. So, he invented Regression Analysis. It certainly made the calculations easier once I knew what I was doing with the data.
