How To Manage A Nerd - Part 2

Published: Sep 14, 2004

Application

Whereas nerds are different from gregarious managers, communicating with a nerd is different.

Lengthy sessions of small talk are exceedingly boring to a nerd. While people-oriented persons view small talk as an essential social function, nerds view it as a complete waste of time. Therefore, skip the small talk and deal with facts that lead to a specific conclusion.

Find the appropriate medium for your messages. An electronic device is a good start. Doodles or flowcharts seem to work in some situations. Seek a comfort zone for the nerd.

Body language seems to play a more important role in "nerdal" communications. Work on your translating abilities.

Observe and adjust to reactions.

When a nerd acts contrary to your suggestion or expresses doubt you have no idea of what you're talking about - fire him or her immediately and before s/he has a chance to plant a virus or otherwise harm your system.
