Praise With Specifics

Published: Mar 11, 2004

Application

We tend to praise with generalities and express adverse criticism with specifics.

We say, "You really made a mess of the report, you forgot to put footers on each page and on page 1 you ...blah ...blah ...blah," and then, we would say, "You did a good job on that report."

Rather, we should point out the items we liked or admired. It helps to repeat specifics expressed by others or to report the positives resulting from the employee's good work.

While you're adapting this idea into your management style it's a good opportunity to check your praise count. How often do you give praise compared to complaints? If you are doing this in an organized way you may feel uncomfortable. Or, if someone comments on your campaign you will have to reduce the frequency and intensity while you escalate it at a later date. Continue until it becomes an integral element of your management style.
