In addition to knowing how to network at a gathering, it's equally important to place yourself at appropriate events.
Because networking is a marketing function, various marketing principles can be applied.
For instance:
Attend meaningful portions of several concurrent meetings as a busy journalist would.
Maintain a balance in the size of gatherings. Small groups afford opportunities to spend more time with each contact while large groups allow for greater exposure.
The usual pick-up line of, "Do you come here often?" could determine how often you return to become more familiar with your prime targets. If the answer is, "No," or "It's my first time," the obvious follow-up is, "Where do you go?"
