Enunciate Your Name

Published: Feb 10, 2005

Application

Most of us mumble when saying our name unless we have been trained to enunciate it clearly.

Think about it - your name is your brand recognition.

Whether it's shyness or not realizing others are hearing it for the FIRST time or for whatever reason, most of us need to practice the clear enunciation of our name and the name of our business.

A mirror will help in phrasing, timing and vocalizing your greatest advertising message - your name. The amount of practice should be commensurate with your nervousness when saying your name.

Listen to how experienced newscasters say their name on each sign-off. Note that little pause between their report and saying their name.

How I Learned Personal Branding

When a broadcaster moves to a new community it's important to learn the pronouncement of local place names. I had mis-pronounced the name of a local church - a serious error in that community. My boss suggested I practice the name and to apologize to our listeners. As I was leaving his lecture, he added, "And practice enunciating your name!"

That's how I learned how to say my name clearly. Now, I do not have to repeat my name when introducing myself at networking events as I hear so many people having to do.
