Work the Audience

Application

You can be the center of attention even when you're not on the agenda. Even when you are not introduced, people will recognize you and if they don't know your identity they will ask others.

Sit in the front of the room near the podium and face the crowd if sitting at a table. This affords a better chance to be included in the medium shots of the television and press cameras. Speakers are more likely to look at you in their attempt to identify with the audience. You will appear to be with the invited dignitaries.

Since you plan to be on display, wear distinctive clothing.

Doing this at every gathering you attend in your community exploits the multiplier effect. You'll find that you will have to arrive early to beat the competition.

Freddie the Furrier

Over 5,000 fashion industry leaders were filing in to witness a spectacular fashion show associated with a trade show. At the breakfast meeting of that same day there was a video presentation by a New York furrier demonstrating how he promoted his fur salon called, "Freddie The Furrier." He had figured prominently in most of his television commercials. To say Freddie had hubris is an understatement.

Well, in this huge theater, there was Freddie standing in the middle of the tenth row from the stage. He was facing the entrance as though he was searching for the person who was to join him. In the meantime, he was acknowledging waves and salutations from his many supposed acquaintances and admirers.

Just as the head of state entered her box and the house lights began to dim, Freddie finally made motions to take his seat I stood up to see how many vacant seats he was holding for his non-arrivals. There were no vacant seats anywhere around him.

It was said the government contributed two million dollars to the staging of that show. Freddie 'milked' a huge amount of that for free publicity.
