Asking appropriate questions is a learned skill or, is it? Children ask a lot of questions. So many, that at times they are told not to ask so many. Consequently, many of us grow up so inhibited we must re-learn the ability. We must learn that it is NOT impolite to ask a lot of questions.
As mature adults we must learn how to ask questions that are appropriate, non-embarrassing (unless your objective is to be otherwise) and on topic.
For beginners, the simple who, what, where, when, why and how routine is a good start. Next, you are going to learn how to key in on specific words, phrases and concepts to ask the speaker to expand or clarify.
Ask a stupid question and you remain a fool for a few minutes - don't ask the question and you could remain a fool forever.
When someone says to you, "I enjoyed talking to you," review the conversation to recall if you asked a lot of questions and allowed the other person to do most of the talking. Experiment by increasing your questioning intensity to see if you get a corresponding increase in the praise.
