Practice your Good Guy / Bad Guy Routine

Published: Feb 1, 2005

Application

Since you've seen this routine played out on many TV dramas, please excuse us as we explain how it works.

A team of two or more deal with a third party from two behavior patterns: one person uses abrasive words and gestures while the other person(s) acts with a friendly and more reasonable manner.

The intensity or subtlety of the behaviors can very according to the situation. The sequence of the roles can be reversed when the third party is a customer trying beat your price down.

Over time or during your practice session you will develop covert signals for you and your partner to start the game.

If you are a parental team, you're probably pretty good at this game.

As mentioned, you've seen enough of this tactic on TV to know the script. So have others. Yet, they still fall for it when your acting has been practiced to a flawless performance.
