Truth and Honesty Are Rare in Larger Cities

Published: Nov 30, 2004

Application

It is a fact of business life in a large metropolitan community that many business persons engage in various tactics that lack truth and honesty. To survive you quickly learn to exercise the same tactics with strangers. Only by creating a close relationship with a limited (constrained by time) group of people will you have some whom you can trust. These people seem adept at differentiating personal and business relationships. That is a sociological fact so you must adapt.

This information becomes valuable for the business person in a small community where everyone seems aware of all the "bad" people in the business community. The "bad" people seldom prosper or survive for long. This is one of the advantages of doing business in a smaller community. It is also one of the most difficult adjustments to manage when people move from a larger city.

It is difficult for the business person in a small community to avoid doing business with people in the large community environments. Many of your suppliers work from there. Your international contacts tend to work in larger cities. Many large-city people populate the internet.

Beyond this awareness is understanding. You will become more benevolent in your caution when you understand people do react and adjust to their environment. Benevolence includes forgiving people who, for various reasons, chose to remain in such an environment.

The erosion of truth tends to appear when a community becomes greater than 100,000 population.
