Make an Offer They Can't Refuse

Published: Sep 14, 2004

Application

You may not have people in your organization who can deposit a horse's head in a bed while someone is sleeping, as was portrayed in the movie, The Godfather. But, there may be times when you can make an offer someone can't refuse.

In a situation when a bully or bureaucrat is demanding you do some kind of action you may have the option to refuse.

Offer Option A

First, get a confirmation with a mirroring question such as, "Are you telling me that I must ..... ?" Secondly, weigh the consequences of your refusal and if they aren't too severe and it saves you time, try stating your refusal firmly. Retain your position just as firmly.

Offer Option B

Get the clear confirmation and statement. Then, ask if it's OK to release this information to a third party. Avoid mentioning the press unless you have an equal amount of money and influence to wage a battle there. Think of some third party that would have a great deal of influence over your protagonist. Neighbors, acquaintances and social groups can be quite effective. Professional associations and human rights organizations can, at times, be very closed-minded and heavy handed.

Offer Options C to Z

Now you've got the idea, use your creativity.
