Instead of trying to impress someone with the great power and influence you possess, use the opposite tack. Especially, if your power and influence isn't all that great anyway.
Tell your adversary you are a nobody with no constraints or obligations. You can add that you're only a resourceful person with a mischievousness, causing some people to call you a loose cannon.
This is a good setup for later telling your adversary they have a choice between doing your preferred action or taking a chance with your mischievousness.
In some situations this can take the form of a joke. In demanding tones you ask, "Do you know who I am?" And when they reply they do not you say, "Thank God for that!"
