We become conditioned to think of our workplace in terms of square foot occupancy. We lease and purchase space by the square foot. We also think 'square footage' when we perform functions such as applying floor covering or paint.
Stop, look around your workplace and evaluate your usage.
Just like Archimedes in his bath I avoided a costly expansion by going through the ceiling.
We were in the midst of calculating the huge cost of expanding or moving for some much needed space when I made the discovery. I climbed a stepladder, lifted a ceiling tile and discovered the ceiling drop was about four feet. It was rented space and we never had occasion to look there previously.
Cabinets and other fixtures were extended into this space. Elaborate schemes for hydraulic lifts and similar access methods were abandoned in favor of a stable platform on wheels, including safety railings, which also happened to serve other transport needs.
