What is Group Think?
If your group has become very cohesive, there is a danger it can become a victim of this closeness.
Here are some ways to recognize the presence of Group Think:
- Group has illusions it is invulnerable.
- Rationalizing away data that does not confirm its assumptions and beliefs.
- Unquestioned belief in the group's morality.
- It stereotypes competitors as weak, evil, stupid, and with bad motives.
- There's pressure on deviants to conform.
- Any censorship is performed only by members.
- There's an illusion of unanimity because silence is taken to mean consent.
- There are self-appointed censors who protect the group from receiving data that does not support assumptions and beliefs.
Some prevention and cures:
- Leader continually encourages open expression of doubt.
- Leader accepts criticism of his/her opinions.
- Higher status members offer opinions last.
- Get recommendations from another source.
- Periodically divide into subgroups.
- Individual members get reaction of trusted outsiders.
- Invite trusted and respected outsiders to join group discussions periodically.
- Assign someone the role of Devil's Advocate.
- Develop scenarios of rivals' possible actions and reactions.
