We can be lulled into a false sense of security by following the standard maxim of, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
Loss of operations due to break-downs can be avoided by upgrading or doing maintenance. You must weigh the cost of under-estimating the expected life with the cost of shutdown during replacement. Your judgement will determine when to leave-well-enough-alone or to replace or upgrade.
Your experience will contribute to a maintenance schedule for each unit of equipment. It doesn't take long to learn this when operating with computer systems. One occasion where all data is lost is enough to teach you to do frequent backups without exception.
Upgrades will bring the advantages of better efficiencies, lower operating costs and better service to your clients.
When it comes to a life-or-death risk such as operating an airline, there are regulators who will prevent you from operating without due diligence. Imagine you're operating an airline if it suits your situation. Your service to your customers and staff is bound to improve.
