Never confuse movement with action. - Ernest Hemingway

Do you have an associate who impresses everyone with a constant flurry of activity yet you have little evidence of results? If so, it's time to have a little results-oriented chat. Often, these energetic people are devoted to helping your cause and need only a little training in converting movement into action. While you're at it, develop a schedule to have similar chats with your lowest producers.

Keep Hemingway's wisdom in mind whenever you are selecting members for a task force.

Also keep in mind that the first response from a request to a bureaucrat is acknowledgment. Don't hold your breath waiting for some action. If it does come - enjoy the pleasant surprise. Instead, do your own follow up before the date promised by the bureaucrat. You always have the option to say their inaction is unacceptable.

Fire the Lowest Producer Every Month

Stories are told about an extremely successful entrepreneur who had a routine to fire the lowest producing salesperson at the end of each month. He may have only practiced that for a short period or he may have modified the harshness over the years. In any case, he has the reputation for expecting results from his employees and is often referred to as a "numbers man."
