Think Things Through to the End

Application

Are you aware of occasions when you wasted your time and that of others by re-visiting a task because you did not think things through to the end? If so, how much of that time was spent trying to find out why something did not work?

Each task has a beginning, a middle and an end. We're talking here about not abandoning a task until the end has been reached. The object of the task works for all applications. All implications and inter-relatedness have been addressed. There will be no need to unnecessarily repeat the task. Doesn't that describe almost all tasks?

It's important to do the thinking at the moment action on the task stops because problems resulting from incomplete inter-relatedness could take a lot of time in searching for a malfunction elsewhere. For instance, an outside contractor fixes a problem with some equipment and leaves the premises announcing, "It's working now." Later, something else is malfunctioning. You conclude it is a separate problem when, in fact, it is the same problem caused by a connection to another device being overlooked or left unattached. Count the person hours due to not thinking things through to the end.

If some associate has the habit of not thinking things through to the end, you have a choice to either correct that person's habit or you doing the thinking on each task assigned. The latter is, of course, time charged to your account on each occasion.

Develop your visualization capability. While practice may not make you a perfect visualizer, each practice will bring you closer to perfect performances in the future. Discuss it with Mr. Who, Ms. Why, Mrs. When, Mr. Where, Master What and The How, Esq.
