Rugged small business operators will take great pride in their ability to solve most problems.
Swallowing your pride can be beneficial.
If you have a good network, you might be able to get a lot of consulting advice free. When you hire a consultant for a specific task or event, consider the savings from not having an extra person on staff or, even worse, having a partner.
Remember – you get what you pay for. So, a busy consultant could be worth a higher fee.
I was using one consultant to help us with some marketing in an area new to us. When I asked for some help with my copy writing he referred me to some bright copywriters who were just setting up their own agency. He proffered the fee might be quite reasonable
I trudged the creaky steps of their third-story walkup. We sat on folding chairs around a card table sipping instant coffee prepared on a packing case.
These two ladies had the nerve to refuse my business. I was still seething during and after the three-hour drive home. It was several days before I realized what had happened.
Their reason was the best bit of advice for my development as a writer of some decent ad copy.
They said, "One, we will never know your product as well as you do; two, we do not know your market area as well as you and, three, your copy is not good but, it but it is not bad. We suggest you go home and work at improving your writing."
They were not fully forgiven until a few years later when I read a magazine article on their success. Their agency was billing millions of dollars a year for focusing upon and pioneering the writing of user-friendly technical instructions for micro-computer users. They were not DUMMIES – they just wrote for some.
