Do you shudder when you hear a flippant, "Everything's under control?"

As well you should. It's often wise to follow the shudder with some questions.

• What is the speaker's authority for saying it or what is his/her track record?
• What is the tone of voice or the situation?
• Appropriate selections from the set of who, what, where, when, why and how questions.

Circumstances, situations and your management style determine your level of investigation, which can range from one simple question to demanding a full report.

On the other hand, when a project has been delegated and the outcome is not deemed crucially important, it may be prudent to accept the comment in good faith.
