Think of Time as Analog and Actions as Digital

Published: Jul 7, 2005

Application

Despite our time-keeping devices ticking the seconds away, we tend to think of the passing of time in analog terms. Our daily lives seem to smoothly flow from one moment to the next as we view time passing along with the gentle sweep of the hands of an analog clock.

Have you ever lounged in a quiet place with no other sound but a ticking clock? Did that sound mesmerize you even further into an extremely relaxed state? That extreme tranquility is not too far removed from our workday thinking of using time as inexact moments.

In contrast, we tend to think of our actions in more discreet digital terms.

Time is a major resource we invest in performing tasks. Are we matching apples with oranges? Are we matching analog time with digital units of performance?

It's more difficult to fool ourselves or others when counting in exact units. Would we accomplish more if we combine digital thinking to our performing while thinking digitally about the units of our time inputs?

Allow yourself to be influenced by this different view of passing time and how you apply it. Visualize units of output being produced by exact units of your time. Does this thought change your attitude about your time usage? Is this some esoteric concept or a practical nudge outside the box? Does this depend on how you respond to the nudge?
