Apply Chunking to Major Sorting Tasks

Published: Mar 17, 2004

Application

Procrastination can occur when there is a major sorting task to perform.

There's a foot-high pile of papers that you estimate will require hours to sort. You are the only person that can make the sorting decisions and you don't have long periods of time for such a task. This is a typical situation where procrastination enters and becomes a negative influence on your self-esteem.

Break the job into smaller parts (chunking) that can be done in several smaller units of time. The first sort can be done with superficial skimming of content. Or, delegate this first sorting to someone with lesser knowledge of the content decisions. Sorts can continue until the stacks become less overwhelming, requiring a few minutes each for the final detailed sort.
