Make Mistakes - That's Where You Learn

Published: Jan 20, 2005

Application

Yes. We are being a bit facetious. We're not suggesting you deliberately make mistakes just to create a learning session.

Although, after you have learned a great deal from a series of mistakes you may do some self-searching and begin to ask yourself, "Am I sub-consciously making mistakes on purpose?"

Rather, we are suggesting you take more calculated risks without the fear of making mistakes. The calculations are to include the costs of failure, the probability of success and the value from the lessons learned. Do enough calculating to ensure you have, at least, one eye open as you proceed. You don't have to know all there is to know before acting.

When the costs can be easily absorbed and the possible returns are attractive. Take a chance.

One bit of rationale is that some of the learning from mistakes could cost less than doing theoretical research. It's like the old marketing saying, "let's run up a flag and see if anyone salutes it."
