Since childhood we are conditioned by the story of the tortoise and the hare, where we learn the virtue that slow and steady wins the race.

The Japanese have Keizoku wa chikara nari - perseverance is power.

Nose to the grindstone, keep on keeping on and don't count the money - count the successes, are slogans we accept as firm truths. Perseverance is a power that drives many people toward success. It should not numb our brains from thinking of the alternatives: know when to fold them, cutting your losses and when things aren't working - try the opposite.
