Your files are full and you or someone else considers buying new file cabinets.
This is a good time to evaluate your filing capacities. Calculate how much filing space your particular function requires. Your calculation may be just speculation at first and can become refined as you experiment. It's building an attitude that can remain with you for life.
Do a purge. Look for such things as irrelevant documents, folders with data no longer required, duplicates, outdated documents and folders with only one or two papers. Purges can become periodic rituals.
Buying additional file cabinets requires more office space and adds to the clutter of extraneous materials.
I once worked alongside a professor who threw out all his lesson materials each spring. He would begin the next semester with all new materials. At first, I thought his action was irrational if not foolish. Upon reflection, I recalled hearing students say they learned more in his courses than in any other. His enthusiasm remained high after twenty plus years of teaching the same subject. Why not? Each year was a new beginning.
I never mustered enough courage to emulate his ruthless abandon. His influence has inspired me to do what I believe are courageous purges where I regularly practice what is recommended in the application above. It has become a rewarding habit.
