Thinking Outside the Box

Application

Aren't you disappointed when you attend a session that used the popular "outside the box" phrase just to attract your attention? Make sure you are indeed outside the box, and not just regurgitating stuff from inside the box.

What is the box? Most likely, the box is filled with conventional wisdom and methods for doing things which may have evolved over time. It's possible the contents require updating to accommodate new technology and other dynamic forces. Maybe that's what's meant by thinking outside the box.

Creative artists first learn the basic conventions from their predecessors. They then create from that base. A creative business person would do well to emulate this process. Apply what-if analyses to all the elements of a traditional method, practice or procedure. Do this under the light of new technology, changing consumer needs or solutions that are no longer effective. Observe successful innovations and look for the basics that were simply updated.

Thinking outside the box may mean nothing more than standing on the shoulders of our business antecedents and seeing a bit further over the horizon. Avoid throwing out the baby with the bath water.

Creativity, we are told by creative people, is a result of hard work.
