Maintain an "In Event of My Death" File

Published: Sep 9, 2004

Application

If giving is greater than receiving, consider this precious gift.

This is especially applicable to the well-organized businessperson who takes care of things.

It's a file including a full set of instructions for when you die. It answers the questions: who, what, where, when, why and how. It is designed for the grieving or his/her supporters. Grieving aside, there will be a tremendous void depending on the amount of details that had been managed by the deceased. Why complicate the loss with a mystery?

Details include copies of important documents, where documents are filed, procedures to follow within hours and days, where immediate cash can be obtained, how to process insurance claims, where cars and other equipment are serviced, serial numbers, contact details of tradespeople, where the garbage schedule is posted, intended recipients of assets, automatic payments from the bank account and so on.

This is a major "feel good" activity.

Stories

Do We Have a Furnace?

A runner collapsed and died at a very young age. In addition to her great sorrow, his widow had to cope with major adjustments to her lifestyle because he had provided her with everything including many of the household responsibilities. As colder weather approached she called a friend to ask how she could make the house warmer.

Her friend asked, "Have you checked the furnace?"

The distraught widow responded with a strange question, "Do we have a furnace?"

On hearing this story I immediately created a file labeled, "In the event of my death." Mine is a brightly colored folder. It is placed in a prominent position and referred to occasionally so my wife will know how to find it immediately. The regular reference often initiates new insertions. There are such things as agreements on burial and funeral preferences, pre-arrangements with a funeral home and updated contact details for those are to be notified immediately.

One day I met the "distraught widow" at a funeral reception. I mentioned the file inspired by her story. She said it was the greatest gift I could give my wife. Now I have the joy of occasionally inserting little gifts into the file.
