All the Water in the Ocean Can't Sink a Ship...

Application

... unless it gets inside.

We have control over our reactions to catastrophes.

Bad things happen. Some we can prevent while many are beyond our control.

Feeling sad is normal and its healthy to allow sadness to run its course. It's OK to cry. So say many grief counselors.

There comes a time to put the issue into perspective and get on with it.

Some people feel healthy enough to brush off the pain and get into corrective action immediately. If you want to try this method and you keep fretting over the disaster or unrealistically blame everything on others, then, it's probable you need to do a bit of work on your mental health program.

Stories

More pro-active than "This, too, shall pass"

This maxim has allowed me to pick myself up after many of those serious blows that befall most of us. It has allowed me to laugh about how sad I was when a disaster struck. It has allowed me to proudly relate the details to another person while explaining the event played a major role in giving me strength to handle serious tragedies in the future.

A friend, with whom I had lost touch, called and asked, "How are things going?" I told him of the disaster that just struck me moments before his call. I added the maxim, "All the water in the ocean can't sink a ship unless it gets inside." It was fitting because he had been an avid competitor in ocean sailboat racing.

I was deeply shocked at his response, "Well, I guess I let the water get inside!"

"Oh, No!" I said, "What happened?"

He had just been admitted to the psychiatric hospital in my city. His career as a very successful financial advisor was ended. The rationale for his dismissal from the hospital was that he was deemed to be incurable. In the succeeding years this has proven to be true. I was one of the very few who stuck by him as a friend. If I were accused of doing that because it was giving me strength, so be it! There was a mutual benefit.

You can be sure I checked for leaks in my ship frequently and carefully during my recovery period.
