Sleep Time is a Stress Symptom

Published: Jan 14, 2005

Application

Do you enjoy the luxury of awaking each morning without the aid of an alarm clock? Do you normally awake early enough that a sleep-in of one or two hours does not interfere with fixed time commitments to others?

If so, you are able to use the clock as an accurate measurement of any stress from the previous day and your reaction to it.

Factor out fatigue due to any abnormal physical or mental activity on the previous day. As the academics are wont to say, ceteris paribus (other things being equal) relating to your general health condition.

So, your demand for sleep serves both as a symptom and a measurement.

This is similar to measuring the need for a Voluntary Nervous Breakdown. This need may, in turn, be the result of any sleep deprivation for various reasons during the workweek and, thus, serves as a safeguard for your overall health.
