"Don't cry over spilt milk" or "You can't saw sawdust" are two of the many sayings for reminding us that we cannot change the past. All of these sayings are easier to say than to follow.
We should not ignore history. History is valuable for strengthening your resolve for not repeating it. Count yourself fortunate if you are one of the few who are able to learn from the experience of others.
To assist you in developing the strength of your resolve for a future of happy thoughts, do some comparisons. Rather than dwelling upon the failures and unhappiness of past events, dwell upon the costs to your present and future.
Totaling the costs should be enough to convince you to do better for yourself in the future.
Accept that shifting your thoughts from the past to the future is not an easy task.
