Donald Trump in his book, Trump: Think Like a Billionaire : Everything You Need to Know About Success, Real Estate, and Life, says he sleeps only four hours each night and that most billionaires he knows do not spend a lot of time sleeping. Later in his book, he suggests if you are experiencing that which you do not like - fire yourself.
Many business advisors emphasize one of the main conditions for success is loving the business you are in. This implies all your enjoyment in life should be received from your daily endeavors. If so, vacations are not for successful entrepreneurs.
When your thoughts do require expansion to new horizons, combine business with pleasure. If your business does not require extensive business trips, attend trade fairs in attractive locations. There you will gather business intelligence and be entertained in some of the most interesting and exotic destinations in the world. (see story below)
Inviting an associate and his or her spouse to join your family at a vacation resort can provide an excellent opportunity to examine a candidate for promotion or to reward for an outstanding contribution to your business.
Problems do arise from a no-vacation policy. You may feel unhappy when accused derogatorily of being a workaholic. Your own lifestyle goals may include a departmentalization of business and pleasure. You may truly seek a work to live existence. The lifestyle of your loved ones may differ from yours. These are problems begging for your usual problem-solving.
A burning desire for frequent vacations could be a symptom for some form of sublimated stress.
One of our more memorable "business vacations" stands out among all our international travels. It was a trade fair attracting agents from important international markets. It was being held aboard the beached Queen Mary in Long Beach.
Exploring a ship that had fond childhood memories was a nostalgic trip for me. The layout of our stateroom was a pleasurable experience. The office area with high-speed internet access was next to the entry and separated from the bedroom with a narrow hallway - perfect for a business with pleasure trip. My wife and business partner wanted a relief from business affairs.
Evenings were filled with explorations and sojourns to local restaurants. A chance meeting over a social dinner was more enjoyable than dining alone in a tourist trap and led to a tremendous business relationship.
After the fair, we drove east to Albuquerque for more business. I doubt we would ever have explored the Route 66 territory or taken that small detour to view the Grand Canyon.
