Delegating is a management skill that must be learned.
Initially delegating requires time for: planning what should be delegated, selecting and training competent staff to accept and fulfill responsibility, defining expectations, coaching for improved performance and a method for measuring and rewarding results. Delegation requires time at the outset for saving time in the long run.
Don't mix delegation with abdication. Some form of follow-up is important.
When you assign responsibility match it with the appropriate authority.
The ultimate accountability rests with the manager who delegates.
