Do It Now!

Published: Mar 26, 2004

Application

One cure for preventing your Do List from becoming an overwhelming stressor is to reduce additions to the list.

Developing a combination of attitude and discipline in this respect will convert negative distress to positive eu-stress.

If an action can be performed at the moment it comes to your attention – DO IT NOW!

It's probable the interruption of it being brought to your attention is your best opportunity to act.

Some examples:
At an event, you have the idea to send a note of praise. Compose the note on the spot. This leaves only the transcription and mailing on your Do List. Carry in your briefcase a 'Thank You' card in a stamped envelope. Compose your note and copy the recipient's address from his/her business card. Thus, leaving only the small task of dropping the handwritten note in a mailbox.
Open your mail next to Files 12 and 13 (see Related Topics) to allow for one handling of some documents to the appropriate container. If an associate is handy, delegate it away from your Do List or desktop with one handling.
Following a meeting, immediately send an email confirming the matters discussed and the tasks assigned along with your thanks for cooperation and effort. Because the thoughts are fresh in your mind, you can compose more quickly and it doesn't require an entry on your Do List.
During a telephone call, compose a directive or do an action. This is when a telephone headset is handy.
Have a card with slots to hold newspaper clippings. Good news about a customer or friend can be clipped as you read the item and placed in a prepared card. Pre-written phases could include, "Congratulations! I thought you might appreciate another copy."

Your own personal methods will evolve from your own attitude and discipline. It doesn't do any harm to be recognized as a person of action.
