Since Time is Money, You Have to Earn It

Application

Referring to parenting, Joyce Maynard wrote, "The word 'no' carries a lot more meaning when spoken by a parent who also knows how to say yes."

Relating this to many of our relationships with people is a good tactic. It is especially good advice in relationships during a manager's adjustment to changes in his or her management of time. We are often advised the best way to get money is to earn it. So it is with time.

This is a common concern for people learning new time management techniques. They'll offer as an excuse, "I can change - it's the people around me who cause the problem."

You have to earn the cooperation and respect from others by trading compromises, sacrifices or benefits to others. Instead of assuming the right to say, "No," to the demands on your time, earn that right by having the reputation of saying, "Yes."
