Overcome the Fear of Delegating

Published: Jul 9, 2004

Application

Is your reluctance to delegate based on fear? It's OK to be afraid. It's NOT OK to allow fear to dominate your action or inaction.

Do you have a fear of losing control or power? Search your own experience or that of others to note how the more you give away, the more you gain. You've discovered how gifting and helping others often yields power and influence to the giver. So it is with delegating. When others assume your less important duties you have more time for the more important ones that, in turn, yield more control and power.

Is your fear based on a sense of inadequacy? Do you know how to delegate? If not, learn and practice by starting out with small baby steps.

Do you fear others cannot do things as well as you can or are you afraid they might do it better? Have you proven this? Have you given them a chance to succeed?

We can go on rationalizing the value of delegating to no avail if fear is involved. Until you confront the fear or determine if it is, indeed, the impediment to your delegating – not much will change. You could remain a busy nobody.
