Some suggestions...
Phrases
- Initiate a summary, get agreement that it's complete.
- Review an action plan.
- Say, "well, that's it!"
- Tell your interrupter you are facing a deadline even if it's self imposed.
- Ask, "Is that all you wanted to see me about?"
- Answer questions with a simple, "Yes" or "No."
- "Is there anything else we can help you with today?" What else can they say after they say, "No?" This is a standard phrase used by call centers.
Actions
- Keep looking at your watch.
- Stand up and "usher" your visitor to the exit.
- Arrange to have an associate announce a call waiting or to remind you of a commitment.
- Have a foot-operated ringing bell or flashing light that appears to distract you.
- Become silent. Most people can't tolerate silence.
Have fun creating unique stoppers. Refresh your memory by consulting your inventory often.
