Follow the Red Threads

Published: Mar 31, 2004

Application

To spot an area where you would like to improve your management of time keep a log of your activities.

In these activity logs watch for the common threads, which others have called "red" threads. These are causes or occurrences which seem to waste your time throughout various actions.

One such red thread could be internal self discipline manifesting itself as the failure to set priorities, objectives and deadlines. Another internal cause could be indecision or procrastination.

When you identify the red thread that is being identified most frequently, you can work at improving that part of your work habits. When you improve on one "internal," it is quite probable you will find that all affected actions will improve.

External threads could be certain associates or customers whom you allow to waste your time. Changing circumstances, practising polite phrases or exercising gentle conditioning of others are some of the ways to combat these time wasters. Other externals are recurring interruptions and distractions.

Take a page from one of Ben Franklin's notebooks (described in Record Your Inefficiencies as They Occur) to conduct your modifying solutions. That's where you list your red threads on a chart and focus on having no lapses for an entire week. For instance: you try not to procrastinate on anything for a whole week.

Most of the tips in this Time Management section relate to common red threads.
