How to Train or Demonstrate a Skill
Published: Apr 13, 2004
Delegating is much easier when you know how to train others.
Application
There are six important steps in training or demonstrating a skill. This combination of steps ensures that the learner fully understands the task and is
able to perform the task without direct supervision. Use this teaching technique for the simplest of tasks or for complex functions.
Remember to tell the learner's colleagues how well s/he is doing.
Step 1 - Introduction
- Trainer:
- Slowly demonstrates and explains the procedure while breaking it into smaller parts. Also explains why the procedure is required and puts it into
context (The Gestalt view). If necessary, repeats demonstration after asking, "Do you want to see that again?"
- Learner:
- Observes. Encouraged to ask questions.
Step 2 - Learner explains without performing
- Trainer:
- Performs the task.
- Learner:
- Gives directions for each movement or task.
Step 3 - Learner does the task while the Trainer explains
- Trainer:
- Gives step-by-step instructions.
- Learner:
- Performs the tasks.
Step 4 - Learner performs and explains the action
- Trainer:
- Observes, stands ready to assist and utters words of encouragement
- Learner:
- Explains what s/he is doing
Step 5 - Re-enforcement
- Trainer:
- Observes while uttering words of encouragement.
- Learner:
- Practices repeatedly until comfortable continuing without direct supervision.
Step 6 - Reassurance
- Trainer:
- "Continue on your own. I'll be right over there. Call me if you need assistance." Returns frequently to observe or offer advanced techniques if appropriate.
- Learner:
- Continues to practice without direct supervision.
