Introduction to QnA Business Plans

Published: Jul 23, 2004

Why the "Question and Answer" Format?

You know most of the answers to the questions anyone would ask about your new venture. If not, you can find the answers.

Uncle Max's questions will:

  1. stimulate your thoughts,
  2. help you organize your material,
  3. allow you to skip from one topic to the next while maintaining continuity,
  4. ensure you have thought of everything,
  5. develop you into a first rate business plan writer and,
  6. produce results that will impress your readers

Because you are not required to answer each question in sequence, you can respond according to your mood or when you have required information ready to insert. This makes it easier for you to write each day or as time permits. Delegating is also simplified by assigning sets of questions to your associates.

We hope you'll discover many ways for using this QnA format.

How to use QnA Business Plans

The first step is to choose which business plan unit you wish to work on.

Here is an example of the "Overview of Venture" unit.

Choosing a business plan unit

Each unit is available as...

The downloadable documents are now available in the more user friendly PDF format. To download the pdf files right click and choose "Save as" or click the link to open the document in your browser. PDF files require Adobe Acrobat Reader.

The next step is to start answering questions about your business venture...

An example from the "Overview of Venture" Unit...

The Principals

Who are the active leaders for this venture?

What are their qualifications?

What is their experience relative to this venture?

What title, role or function will each play in this venture?

Who is involved but not active in day-to-day operations.

Will you need a separate page to describe each person?

What are the financial resources of each?

What is each principal's personal investment in the venture?

Do they have other resources to dedicate to the venture?

Is there a need to divide the above information into present and future.......

After completing the questions in a section (in this case "The Principals") retain the section title and replace the questions with an appropriate sub-title or an empty space*.

* Note: You may wish to delay the question removal process until you have completed your entire plan.

After removing your questions, what remains is a business plan that should answer most of the questions of concern to your readers.

Progress Record and Checklist

Keep track of your contributions for each writing session if you are skipping from one topic to another and/or leaving items unfinished. Some of the reasons for jumping around are: (a) allowing your mood to determine topics for each session, (b) recording as ideas come to you, (c) awaiting additional information or (d) you're a born skipper.
